In my paintings, nature is at odds with itself through the contradictions of lush versus barren and rapture versus displeasure. The berries, loops, and tiny dots represent an abundance of eggs and seeds. Heaps are an important element: these berries, loops, tiny dots, and sometimes creatures accumulate in mounds and represent the bounty of femininity and ripeness. Themes of excess and beauty are represented through the decorative elements. Yet, these invasive patterns creep into the environments of the animals — sometimes overtaking, even strangling — and along with the ominous berry, create a picture of sensuality mixed with undertones of wanting and dismay.
